Siberian night, ten years apart, will the silenced cries stifled within those fragmented letters and notebooks ever see the light? The light you once yearned for was no Spring, just as those red splashes pouring onto the frozen soil are no rain but wounds I'd forgotten to heal a long, long time ago. Facing me, splashes of blood, within which your present collapsed into dotes of a reversed future, like ebbing tides dictated by no moons imaginable, and my past buried me instead. Shining poplars, a rainy Siberian night, with clouds that are multiplied by various forms of sorrow, and this is it, just one more decade to endure --- only this time, backwards. So don't cry, my joy and sorrow, and forgive me, for it was supposed to be love.
In this second full-length, Культура Курения keeps marching on their sonic path that contemplates love, loss, and the evasive passage of time, yet the previous harshness of youthful defiance is replaced by a more intuitive and meditative tone that puts an emphasis on the realm of bittersweet post-rock melodies and dreamlike ambiance. The grief of humanity is perfectly captured in these five tracks of splendid depressive rock. A different kind of sadness from their debut but no less captivating. If you prefer Post-Black/Blackgaze to pure DSBM, this is a gem of 2023 you shouldn't miss.
