This is the third full-length from Vitriolic Sage, one of the most promising acts among the new generation of Chinese Black Metal. As a conceptual album exploring dreams and loss, 梦路 is the most personal one this project has ever offered: with most lyrics written in Mandarin, the story recounts a bewildered narrator and his yearning for return amidst entwined paths of dreams and haunted past --- given flesh by a more despairing (albeit still full of vehemence) vocal performance. Music-wise, the songwriting on 梦路 is less aggressive and "progressive" than his previous releases; the tone is unmistakably melancholy, with straightforward yet heartfelt melodies and passages --- a "post-black metal twist," perhaps, yet the ferocious riffs so prevalent in his previous work still have their fangs. This is top Melodic Black Metal.
