Ekstasis is a veritable “supergroup” of Cascadian folk and metal veterans. Containing six members, Johnny (Fauna, Echtra, Eigenlicht, Threnos, Fearthainne); Ray Hawes (Skagos, Eigenlicht, Iskra); Marit Schmidt (Sangre De Muerdago, Vradiazei); Michael Korchonoff (Alda, Novemthree); Mara Winter (Eigenlicht); Mae Kessler.
The 2nd album“The Adversary”is both a refinement and an evolution of their sound, adding more nuance and tenderness to their repertoire while maintaining the urgency and intimacy of the previous album. The songs are based more heavily on folk and improvisational styles, while retaining neo-classical influences. The addition of Marit Schmidt on viola further adds to the complexity and depth of the compositions. In addition to their devotees in the folk and metal underground, fans of European folk from Ireland to Romania will find a sound to celebrate in The Adversary, as well as those versed in medieval and Persian Classical traditions.
