Arguably one of the most important pioneers who defined the sound of Ukrainian Black Metal, DRUDKH and their essential classics need no introduction. Honing their oeuvre over decades -- how BM is crafted through atmosphere, patience, and inner exile -- their music consistently privileges emotional continuity over exposition, drawing strength from restraint and repetition.
Відлига | Thaw can best be described as a companion work to the recently released full-length album Гра тіней | Shadow Play -- a direct continuation of its themes, conceived during the same creative period and sharing its emotional and thematic foundation. Rather than expanding outward, the EP turns inward, presenting three compositions that function as a distilled appendix to the innerworld of Shadow Play.
At the heart of this work lies a form of transition that is hard to define or capture -- the process of thawing and dissolution has already begun to reveal itself, yet the surrounding landscape remains frozen in place. The songs unfold gradually; suspended melodies, intentionally unresolved structures, and an ever-deepening sense of stillness permeate the EP. Memory, liminality, and fragile, subtle transformation are among the themes allowed to emerge organically. Yet, perhaps deliberately, the essence of these transformations is one of suspended restraint -- patience and uncertainty suspended before the unknown. Consequently, the emotional trajectory of the EP never reaches a dramatic climax, only within an unresolved state of contemplation.
Pest Productions will release the official Cassette version of this gem of an EP. No devoted follower of DRUDKH should overlook this concise yet essential work -- its beauty as an appendix, and the reflections, longing, and dreamlike melancholy it contains.
