Glittering ashes and ember-hued particles, or how one unbinding soul perceives the pulses of mountains and their foliages amidst Its carefree wandering: unbinding and unleashed, since immersing in the state of solitude has been the only way of breathing It knows of. Painful but equally tranquil, the sky of Its dream-on-the-move is nothing but a watery state of emptiness, some mirror-like surface where the loss and deformity of Its past self remain intact -- only if It gazes into, amidst the rippling and irrigating darkness, yet It would not.
For one’s journey into such a solitary meditation, there’s no need for an end of any sort. After its well-received 2023 debut Vestige, Chinese DSBM nova WANDERER returns with a much different offering when another year of bitterness and regret draws its closure. In the new album Sinking Misery, the mastermind 杨厄 (DoomYang, see also 山神廟-SrenHlinMrews) pushes the troublesome inner world depicted in the debut into Nature and its desolate essence: with its four long tracks spanning over 50 minutes, Wanderer shifts the previous arrangements reminiscent of classic melancholic DSBM riffages to a more atmosphere-focused approach -- similar to the strength he’s already asserted in SrenHlinMrews, only the aesthetics is not so much philosophical musing through mountains and woods but simply a sadness as vast as nature and its landscape -- and maybe, its sublimity too: a rumination where one’s mind drowns.
